Time to take control.

When it comes to mountain biking, the brake lever and cockpit set up are crucial components that can greatly impact your riding experience and overall control of the bike. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned rider these minor adjustments will improve the enjoyment and comfort of your ride.

Firstly, let's focus on the brake lever. The brake lever is the primary control for braking which is essential for speed modulation and control. Mounting the brake levers at the right angle and position will provide you with optimal comfort and leverage, allowing you to apply the brakes more effectively.

To start, ensure that the brake levers are inline with your arm and fingers, slightly angled downwards towards the ground. This position promotes a natural hand position and reduces wrist strain. Most levers have reach adjustments on the brake levers to match the size of your hands. This allows you to bring the lever closer or further from the handlebars. Having the levers closer to the bars will make it easier for riders with smaller hands to reach.

let's move on to the cockpit set up, which involves the handlebars, stem, and grips. The correct cockpit set up helps you maintain control, maneuverability, and stability on the trail. Firstly, select handlebars that match your riding style and preferences. Wider handlebars offer increased stability and control, while narrower bars provide better maneuverability.

Mount the handlebars so that they are level or slightly angled upwards. This position allows for a comfortable riding position and better weight distribution. Next, adjust the stem's length and angle to achieve a comfortable riding posture. A shorter stem will promote a more upright riding position, trail or Enduro riding. Whereas a longer stem offers a more aggressive, forward- posture xc racing for example. Experiment with different positions to find the one that suits you best. Or get your local bike shop to help you.

Lastly, choose grips that provide adequate comfort and grip. Grips that are too narrow or too thick can cause discomfort and even numbness over long rides. Look for grips that offer a good balance between comfort and control, and ensure they are securely fastened to the handlebars to prevent slipping.

A well-adjusted brake lever and cockpit set up on your mountain bike can greatly enhance your performance, control, and overall riding enjoyment. Take the time to properly set up and fine-tune these components to ensure a safe and comfortable experience on the trails.
